The staging of golf's oldest major, the Open Championship, scheduled for Royal St George's in Kent on July 16th, has yet to be resolved.
Golf Digest reported that the tournament would be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but no decision has been reached.
Martin Slumbers, CEO of the Royal and Ancient, said:
“We are continuing to work through our options for The Open this year, including postponement. Due to a range of external factors, that process is taking some time to resolve. We are well aware of the importance of being able to give clear guidance to fans, players and everyone involved and are working to resolve this as soon as we can. We will give a further update as soon as we are in a position to do so and thank everyone for their support and understanding in this challenging situation.”
The Masters and US PGA Championship have already been postponed.
Last year's Open Championship was won by Ireland's Shane Lowry at Royal Portrush.
Lowry, who turns 33 today, lifted the claret jug for the first time and it remains to be seen when he will defend his title.
Next year's Open Championship is scheduled for St Andrews in Scotland.
