Sarah Lavin and Mark English miss out on semi-final places

Donegal's Mark English and Limerick's Sarah Lavin haven't advanced from their athletics heats at the Tokyo Olympics.

English ran in finishing fourth in 1:46.75 in his 800-metres heat. The time was two seconds slower than the Irish national record he set last month.

"Coming into the year, my two goals were to qualify for the Olympics and get a new Irish record, and I did that," English said of his performance.

A second-best ever run from Limerick's Sarah Lavin wasn't enough for her to advance from the 100-metres hurdles heats. She clocked 13.16 seconds in placing seventh this morning.

“I never got going,” Lavin said on RTE Sport after her heat. “It is my second-fastest time ever but looking back on the race briefly there, I never got going out of the blocks.

"I was running someone else’s race for the whole thing. You want to come here and you want to run your best time.

I’m capable of being in the semi-finals. I don’t think I’m capable of being in the final right now. I’ll be here in three years’ time hopefully again and obviously want to go further than the heats.”
