Wolves complete signing of Nelson Semedo from Barcelona

Wolves have completed the signing of Portugal international Nelson Semedo from Barcelona for a fee that could rise to €40 million.

The right-back has agreed a deal to keep him at Molineux until June 2023, with an option to extend it to the summer of 2025.

Nuno Espirito Santo has been on the lookout for a right-back following the departure of Republic of Ireland international Matt Doherty to Tottenham.

The Wolves boss started Adama Traore on the right against Manchester City on Monday night but he tends to use the Spaniard in a more advanced role.

26-year-old Semedo made 124 appearances for Barca and has played 13 times for Portugal so he'll be more than familiar with several of his new Wolves teammates.

"It isn't often that we have the opportunity to sign a world-class player from a world-class club," said Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi.

Semedo becomes the third permanent signing by Wolves during this transfer window, following the arrival of Ki-Jana Hoever from Liverpool and Fabio Silva from Porto.

Barcelona said the deal is an initial €30 million plus €10 million "in variables".

Semedo told the club website what Wolves fans can expect and why he chose to move to the Premier League.

"Last year they did a very good season and it's a very important team in England, in Europe also," Semedo said.

"I hope this year we can do very good things. Nuno is a very good coach. He did very good things here in Wolves, and in other teams too. For sure I'm going to learn a lot from him."

"They can expect a modern right-back, who likes to attack. I can bring the team pace, speed.

"I like to go forward and come back. They can expect a lot of work and a lot of ambition.

"I’m very excited to be here. It’s a very good team. To play in the Premier League is a dream from me too.

"So, I’m very excited to begin, to meet my teammates and start training."
