Tottenham's Premier League game with Brighton postponed

It's been confirmed that Sunday's Premier League meeting of Brighton and Tottenham has been postponed.

It follows an outbreak of COVID-19 among the Spurs squad that also caused Thursday night's UEFA Europa Conference League game to be called off.

At least eight members of the Tottenham squad - and five backroom staff - have tested positive for COVID-19. On Wednesday night, they announced that health authorities had advised their training facilities to be closed.

Spurs are starting to amass a heavy backlog of fixtures, even before the busy Christmas period kicks into gear.

Their Premier League game away to Burnley still needs to be rearranged, after heavy snow at Turf Moor caused its late postponement almost a fortnight ago.

A Premier League statement read:

"Brighton & Hove Albion's home fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, due to be played on Sunday 12 December at 14:00 GMT, has been postponed following a Premier League Board meeting this afternoon.

"Tottenham Hotspur asked for the match to be rearranged following a significant number of positive COVID-19 cases among players and relevant staff.

"This led to First Team facilities at the club's training centre being closed after consultation with the Premier League and UK Health Security Agency.

"The Premier League Board has taken the decision to postpone the game following guidance from medical advisers, with the health of players and staff the priority.

"The postponed fixture will be rescheduled in due course and the Premier League wishes a quick recovery to those with COVID-19."

It remains unclear when that decisive Conference League game with Rennes will be played.

Ouest-France report that the Ligue 1 side will not agree to Tottenham's suggestion that the game be played next Wednesday (December 15).

Under UEFA regulations, all group stage matches must be completed by the turn of the year.

Rennes are unhappy with the "unilateral" manner in which Spurs announced the postponement of the game, when they were happy to still travel to London.
