Thomas Tuchel confirmed as the new manager of Chelsea

Chelsea have confirmed the worst kept secret in football - Thomas Tuchel is their new manager, replacing Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

The 47-year-old German has been out of work since being sacked by Paris Saint Germain just before Christmas.

Last season, Tuchel brought PSG to their first-ever Champions League final - they lost narrowly to Bayern Munich.

Tuchel had a limited playing career because of injuries, but has excelled as a coach, first with youth teams at Stuttgart and then the second team at Augsburg.

He replaced Jurgen Klopp as manager of Mainz in 2009 and was on hand again to follow in the footsteps of Klopp when the current Liverpool boss left Borussia Dortmund in 2015.

At Dortmund, Tuchel won just one trophy - the DFB Pokal in 2017 - but the Bundesliga performances were solid - a second-place finish followed by a third.

His new job is to get the best of out of Chelsea's big-money signings - including two fellow Germans - striker Timo Werner, who hasn't scored in the Premier League since November, and Kai Havertz, who has one goal and three assists to his name from 16 Premier League games.

Lampard paid the price for a poor run of form that sees Chelsea ninth in the Premier League, 11 points behind leaders Manchester United.
