Swiss FA confirm Shaqiri tests positive for COVID-19

Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for coronavirus, the Swiss Football Association has confirmed.

The 28-year-old is away on international duty with Switzerland and is now self-isolating.

Shaqiri is the third Liverpool player to contract COVID-19 within a week, after Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane were both ruled out of Sunday's defeat to Aston Villa because of positive tests.

A statement from the Swiss FA read: "Xherdan Shaqiri has tested positive for Covid-19. In consultation with the health authorities, he is in isolation.

"The strict protective measures and requirements of UEFA for national teams in accordance with the 'UEFA Return to Play Protocol' have been strictly adhered to since the move began.

"Based on this, clarifications are currently underway with the local health authorities about how to proceed."

Switzerland are due to play Croatia in a friendly on Wednesday before they face Spain and Germany in the Nations League.

Shaqiri has only made one appearance for Jurgen Klopp's side this season and that was in a League Cup game away to Lincoln in September.

The Swiss international has not been included in the matchday squad for any of Liverpool's opening four games in the Premier League.
