Sturridge fined and banned for breach of betting rules

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been banned from playing football for two weeks and fined £75,000 after being found guilty of breaching betting rules.

Sturridge was hit with a six-week ban but four weeks were suspended, meaning he's free to play again on July 31.

The 29-year-old - who left Liverpool at the end of last season - faced eleven charges concerning alleged breaches of the inside information rule around possible transfer moves in January 2018.

Sturridge was found not guilty on nine of those, but charges 3 and 4 were proven. He was found to have told his brother to place bets on him moving to Sevilla during the transfer window in January 2018, a transfer that didn't happen.

The FA is unhappy with the leniency of the sentence and have launched an immediate appeal on the ruling.

In a statement, the FA said it "respectfully disagrees with the regulatory commission's findings and will be appealing against the charges which were dismissed and the sanction which was imposed".
