"It has to be settled on the pitch" | Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber

Promotion to the Premier League should be scrapped if the Championship season is cancelled, according to the Norwich's sporting director Stuart Webber.

Norwich are bottom of the Premier League table and favourites to be relegated if the season resumes but Webber says the Canaries will not accept a scenario in which they are relegated and replaced by a club who didn't earn promotion on the pitch.

The Premier League continues to discuss options for 'Project Restart' but there is less certainty surrounding the potential resumption of football in the Championship, League 1 and League 2.

Leeds United and West Brom currently occupy the automatic promotion places in the Championship so if the season cannot be decided on the pitch, Leeds and West Brom could be awarded a place in next season's Premier League.

Webber told The Football Show on Sky Sports: "In my opinion, it needs to be settled on the pitch, not off the pitch. The big question we have around restarting is it's fine if we restart and three teams get relegated.

"We look at it as we're only six points off 16th rather than being adrift. If we do that, that's fine because that's were it should be played, football should be played on the pitch not the boardroom.

"What we could not accept is a situation where we play all our games and get relegated but the Championship can’t play and they automatically promote some teams who haven’t finished the season.

"For anyone who has got promoted from the Championship, it is a 46- or 49-game slog … It needs to be settled on the pitch – both coming up and going down."

Webber was asked if that also meant Norwich should stay in the Premier League while Leeds and West Brom remain in the Championship if the season does not resume, he replied: "Yeah, that would be my honest opinion."
