Reports: Jack Byrne for APOEL exit as MLS move mooted

Jack Byrne looks set to be on his way out of APOEL Nicosia after only nine months with the Cypriot Premier League club.

The 25-year old is yet to feature for APOEL this season, after having his 2020-21 campaign prematurely ended by a back injury.

To date, Byrne has only played 5 times for APOEL following his move from Shamrock Rovers in January.

He signed a contract until May of 2023, at a time when APOEL were managed by Mick McCarthy. However, the former Republic of Ireland boss was sacked days later, since taking up the reins at Cardiff City.

The Irish Independent reports that Byrne appears destined for a move to Charlotte FC, who will be added to MLS for the 2022 season.

In the meantime, Byrne is likely to seek a short-term move back to the UK where he's already had spells with Manchester City, Wigan, Oldham and Kilmarnock.

His position at APOEL will not be helped by the return to the club of Lucas Souza.

The Brazilian midfielder left in 2020 for Chinese Premier League team, Changchun Yatai, and subsequently Beijing Guoan on loan.

But Souza has returned to APOEL, for whom he played almost 100 games during a three-year spell from 2017.

"Returning to APOEL was something I really wanted," Souza said, "It is the team with whom I achieved many important things.

"I won titles and competed in European competition.

"I know very well the expectations of the people and the demands they will have from me.

"I can promise them that I will always give 100% on the field, to make them proud. People know who Lucas Souza is."
