PL Best Case/Worst Case - EP1 | Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth

Every day on OTB AM ahead of the return of the Premier League on June 17th, we'll be running the rule over teams in groups of three or four in our new segment - Best Case/Worst Case.

It's hard to believe top-tier football in England is finally returning, and undoubtedly clubs will be approaching the upcoming behind closed doors fixtures with renewed focus.

But ultimately we will still have champions, we will still have qualification for Europe, and we will still have relegation - so how are teams likely to fare when the action resumes?

Our own resident Premier League expert Nathan Murphy joined Eoin Sheahan this morning, and they discussed the best and worst case scenarios for three Premier League clubs.

ARSENAL

Current position: 9th

First game back: Man City (a) - June 17th

NATHAN'S THOUGHTS:

"The best case is finishing inside the top five, which should be enough for a Champions League place [if Man City are banned].

"This is an Arsenal side that have won five games in the Premier League in five months, yet somehow have been able to hang on in there. Mikel Arteta's most definitely still in a honeymoon period, it feels as though any little improvement or victory he gets credit for.

"They need to qualify for Europe... I think it's a huge task when you look at their fixtures between now and the end of the season. They play Man City in the first game back, they have to play Liverpool, they have a north London derby against Tottenham.

"Best-case scenario is they go on a ridiculous run, worst-case scenario is they end up finishing ninth or 10th.

ASTON VILLA

Current position: 19th

First game back: Sheffield United (h) - June 17th

NATHAN'S THOUGHTS:

"Survival is best-case scenario! They're two points from safety but do have a game in hand. I just don't think they have the quality to stay up, I don't think they have enough good attacking players to stay up.

"They are going to be beneficiaries of the break with players returning from injury... if they can survive it'll be a massive achievement.

"Will it be enough to keep Jack Grealish? Maybe Villa are the beneficiaries of tightened wallets, that actually Manchester United can't afford to buy him right now. [But] if they go down, there's no question Grealish is gone."

BOURNEMOUTH

Current position: 18th

First game back: Crystal Palace (h) - June 20th

NATHAN'S THOUGHTS:

"They've had horrific injuries... David Brooks is back. They haven't scored a lot of goals this season, if you look at the Expected Goals, things just haven't fallen right for [Callum] Wilson and [Josh] King.

"Eddie Howe looked a manager short on ideas [before the break], that he was starting to feel the pressure in those last few weeks, only one point from their last four matches, dropped into the relegation zone on goal difference.

"I think they have the quality to score enough goals to keep them up. The one issue maybe is the fixture list, they don't play any of the bottom six between now and the end of the season so they don't have too many relegation six-pointers.

"Palace is their first game back, then they have Wolves and Newcastle - if they can take six or seven points from those three games, they'll be fine."
