Murphy slams "idiots in football" for breach of coronavirus guidelines

Former world snooker champion Shaun Murphy has hit out at "idiots in football" that could compromise elite sport during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Murphy was beaten by Stuart Bingham in the quarter-finals of the Masters in Milton Keynes, which is being played behind closed doors due to the pandemic.

The 2005 world champion backs elite support continuing during the pandemic but he thinks that other certain sports need to get their house in order.

"I can only speak for myself but when you compare the number of tests, positive results we have compared to other sports, we're just a complete minority," he told PA.

"That's because our players respect the rules, our players respect the public that are paying their wages and watching them perform and we want to out here performing for everyone.

"Maybe some of the footballers, maybe they earn too much to care, maybe they're not bothered about that.

"I'm not sure who he is but there was one footballer who's been done several times...he just had a big party at his house on New Years Eve.

"I'm not sure who it was because I'm not a massive football follower but I know it happened.

"We're supposed to all be in this together but it doesn't quite feel like that at the moment.

"I would hate if it my sport, the sport that I have been in love with for 30 years and that I know brings so much joy to so many people was stamped on because of some of these idiots in football."
