More Newcastle embarrassment as Lyon deny Guimaraes deal

Newcastle have been left frustrated again in their attempts to bolster their squad, with Lyon denying a deal has been done for Bruno Guimaraes.

Widespread reports on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning suggested a deal was imminent for the 24-year old Brazilian.

Newcastle looked set to secure the defensive midfielder's signature for the price of €40million.

Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have been signed already in this transfer window, but the Magpies' Saudi Arabian owners have had to become accustomed to the word 'no'.

Newcastle had hoped to sign Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, but the La Liga club are said to have raised their asking price for the 28-year old, leaving some to use the phrase 'Newcastle tax' or 'Saudi tax'.

A loan deal for Manchester United's soon-to-be out of contract winger Jesse Lingard has also collapsed, while the Toon continue to weigh up a separate loan offer for Lingard's United teammate Donny van de Beek.

But Lyon's statement on Wednesday is the most public yet of their many humiliations.

"Olympique Lyonnais categorically denies the false information disseminated by many media reporting an agreement between Newcastle and OL for the transfer of Brazilian international midfielder Bruno Guimaraes," it read.

"In this transfer window period where the slightest rumour is often presented as reality, Olympique Lyonnais reminds that only information officially released by the club is to be taken into consideration."

It's believed Newcastle remain hopeful of capturing Guimaraes, who is currently on international duty with Brazil.
