Mohan: U19 elite progress makes up for past disappointments

The Republic of Ireland U19s progressed to the elite phase of European Championship qualifying with a 2-0 win over Bulgaria.

Goals from Sligo Rovers wunderkind Johnny Kenny and Lincoln's Roughan Curtin secured second spot in Group 6.

Earlier in the week, Ireland had survived a late comeback to beat Montenegro 3-2, while Kenny's second goal of the group on Saturday contributed to a 1-1 draw with Bosnia Herzegovina.

Bosnia's 4-0 win over Montenegro on Tuesday saw them finish top of the group on goal difference.

Speaking after the game, U19 boss Tom Mohan said, "I'm delighted for the players and staff.

"They have worked incredibly hard and they deserve to qualify. The logistics to get here were difficult and we were up against tough opposition over the three games."I'm so happy to qualify for the Elite Round. A lot of these players missed the Elite Round at the Under-17 age group so to get the job done and go into the next phase of qualification next year is all down to the brilliant work of the players and staff."

The draw for the elite phase will be made in the spring of 2022, with Ireland among the third seeds off the 28 nations to progress.
