Liverpool beat Newcastle to take Premier League title race to final day

Liverpool have defeated Newcastle United 3-2 at St James' Park to regain top spot in the Premier League and ensure the title race will conclude on Sunday week.

The Reds were leggy after the midweek defeat in Barcelona, but they dug out a huge victory which puts the pressure back on champions Manchester City.

Defender Virgil Van Dijk headed the Reds into the lead from a corner on 13 minutes.

Christian Atsu levelled 7 minutes later, before Mo Salah restored Liverpool's lead by turning the ball home on 28 minutes.

Salomon Rondon then made it 2-2 with a driving shot from inside the area 9 minutes into the second half.

However, Liverpool were not to be denied and from a set piece 4 minutes from the end, Divock Origi's header found the net.  The Belgian, who scored the winner in the Merseyside Derby earlier this season, was introduced for Salah in the second half.  The Egyptian suffered a knock on the head and is being assessed.

So Liverpool are on a remarkable tally of 94 points.  City host Leicester City at the Etihad Stadium on Monday night, two points adrift, with that their game in hand.

The games on the final day will see Liverpool host Wolves at Anfield and City away to Brighton, who are now safe.

Cardiff City have been relegated to the Championship.

The Welsh Club lost 3-2 at home to Crystal Palace.

Nine man Tottenham lost 1-0 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Spurs must now beat Everton on the final day to be sure of playing Champions League Football next season.

Elsewhere, West Ham United saw off Southampton 3-0 at the London Stadium.

And Wolves defeated Fulham 1-0 at Molineux.

Celtic are Scottish Premiership champions for the 8th season in a row following their 3-0 defeat of Aberdeen.

And SSE Airtricity League Premier Division leaders Shamrock Rovers have suffered a setback.

They lost 2-1 to Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds.
