Lennon pleased with "high standard" Celtic despite 4-2 loss to Milan

Celtic manager Neil Lennon was happy with he performance of his players, despite them suffering a 4-2 loss away to AC Milan.

The complexion of the game looked very different with just 14-minutes on the clock.

Celtic were 2-0 up at the San Siro courtesy of goals from Odsonne Edouard and Tom Rogic.

Sadly for Lennon and co, the Serie A leaders eventually came to their senses and they'd achieved parity by half-time thanks to Hakan Calhanoglu and Samu Castillejo.

Jens Hauge poked Milanese noses in front five-minutes after the break, before Brahim Diaz made the game safe for the Rossoneri inside the final ten minutes.

But Celtic will go into their final Group H game at home to Lille still seeking a first win of the group phase.

"Even at 3-2 I thought we were always in the game," Lennon said afterwards, "and Donnarumma has made a great save from [Ryan] Christie from the free-kick.

"And we looked a threat all night. But we've let ourselves down in not being physical enough in the tackle at times.

"It's not as if we've been cut open. We've had plenty of players back to deal with it, and we don't.

"That's the way the game went, that's where the tie was lost really. There wasn't much in it between the teams.

"I thought we had more attempts at goal and worked the goalkeeper than they did to us."

Lennon felt the scoreline didn't do his side justice, and the performance levels were far above those shown in their League Cup exit to Ross County at the weekend.

Regardless, that's now three defeats on the spin for the Scottish champions, and a record of only two wins from eleven games.

But Lennon sees plenty of positives in their San Siro outing, "We've taken the game to Milan.

"We've tried to get a bit of respectability back to our performance and I think I got all that.

"And they looked far more like themselves."

The Hoops boss added, "I'm sitting here disappointed, obviously. It's another defeat, it's a sore one to take.

"But I'm also very proud of the reaction and their will to put on a performance.

"And we looked far more like the Celtic team that I know."
