John Giles "doubts" Man City will catch Liverpool

Liverpool's Merseyside Derby win on Wednesday restored their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

The victory also kept the gap to reigning champions Manchester City at 11 points.

There are still 23 more rounds of fixtures to go before season's end, so much could still change in the interim.

However, it will be a tall order for Man City to close the gap and John Giles doubts the chances of anyone catching Liverpool.

"It appears at the moment as if it's too late," he said of Man City's title hopes.

"I doubt if they can do it. Because I can't see Liverpool losing a lot of matches the way they're playing.

Switch focus to Champions League?

"Their attitude week in and week out since the start of the season has been brilliant. So I can't see them slipping up that many times to allow City to come in.

"City might go on a run of their own. I mean, if they pick up the season, they might be worth a bet in the Champions League. They might say, 'The league is too far gone but now we'll really concentrate on the Champions League'.

"I think they're capable of doing that. Liverpool have a sticky program coming up but that's all one match at a time.

"Last night could have been a sticky match for them. [Klopp] rested a lot of players and he's got the confidence to do that. He has confidence in the players that are coming in. Now, if they can win like they did last night with some of their main players out, it's a great, great sign for future success for Liverpool. Because these guys can go and win matches for them and rest some of his best players."
