Gary Neville | Man United to finish above Liverpool next season

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville feels his old club have what it takes to finish above champions Liverpool in the Premier League next season.

The ex-England international was speaking to Stadium Astro about the progress he wants to see from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team, after the third-placed finish last term.

Although the Old Trafford outfit secured Champions League football for the upcoming season, they ended up 33 points behind Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's champions were a level above everyone else in the league, finishing 18 points ahead of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in second.

Neville though feels United have what it takes to close the gap.

"I’m going to go Man City, Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea, but that’s with a little bit of hope rather than science!

"Finishing third last season was a big moment for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. That demonstrated progression.

"I think he has to break that top-two or get close to that top-two and get close to the title.

"To get close to the top-two and win a trophy – maybe in one of the cup competition – would be acceptable. He would have to get close to winning a title by his third season [to be considered a success].

"The fans want to see progression and Manchester United have to continue to progress."

United have just completed the €45 million transfer of Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax, with the 23-year-old signing a five-year deal.

The club have also been linked with French defender Dayot Upamecano, as well as Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho, Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, and Bayern Munich's Liverpool target Thiago Alcantara.

The champions will get the defence of their domestic crown underway on Saturday, September 12th against newly-promoted Leeds United at Anfield.

Manchester United, because they were in Europa League action of late, will instead play their season-opener the following week against Crystal Palace. This is to ensure the minimum 30-day break for clubs taking part in UEFA competitions.
