Galway United handed walkover in postponed Cabinteely fixture

Galway United have been awarded a 3-0 win over Cabinteely after the Dublin side failed to fulfil April's SSE Airtricity First Division fixture.

John Caulfield's side had travelled to Stradbrook for the April 9 game, but a COVID-19 case within the Cabinteely camp meant the game could not go ahead.

Cabinteely players had protested the punishment which has now been handed their way.

In a statement released prior to the following week's game with UCD they said, "We, the players of Cabinteely FC, are making a stand on on behalf of our health and safety and the unjust decision by the FAI to insist on our recent home game against Galway United to be played, this after the HSE advising Cabinteely FC to stand all players down, after a positive Covid-19 outbreak.

They added, "Cabinteely FC have been unfairly penalised by the FAI in awarding 3 points to Galway United FC for calling the game off".

Earlier this week, Cabinteely said they informed the FAI of the positive case via email at 10am on the day of the Galway game, but "it was after 2pm before the FAI contacted the HSE".

They again insisted they were ready to play, and had done everything correctly regarding coronavirus protocols.

Cabinteely indicated they would not be challenging the decision to award Galway a 3-0 win as, "Based on our previous experience an ‘independent’ FAI Arbitration is not the solution".

Earlier this year the club took their case (before ultimately dropping it) to CAS regarding a player eligibility issue that saw them miss out on last season's First Division playoffs - ironically - to the benefit of Galway.
