Former Leeds defender Trevor Cherry dies aged 72

Leeds United have confirmed that their former defender Trevor Cherry has passed away at the age of 72.

Cherry was a member of the famous Leeds team who won the League Championship under Don Revie in 1974.

A left back by trade, he would go on to make 482 appearances for the Yorkshire club in all competitions from 1972 to 1981.

He's the second member of that title-winning side to die in recent weeks.

Norman Hunter succumbed to coronavirus on April 17 at the age of 76.

Cherry had the honour of succeeding Billy Bremner as Leeds captain in 1976, and won 27 caps for England.

"Winning the league was probably the main one," Cherry told the Yorkshire Evening Post of his highlights at Leeds, "While captaining the club and playing for England was right up there.

"But there was so many. Actually just joining them was a tremendous step up for my career.

"It would have been nice to lift a trophy as captain, but it was a time when we'd peaked, if you like.

"Some good lads came through, but the club slipped away from the big boys.

"But I was always happy to stay. To be honest, at one point, I could have gone to Southampton, when Kevin Keegan was there, and Man City. But it didn't seem right and I liked Leeds.

"They lifted my career and enabled me to play for England and it doesn't get any better than that.”

Along with John Giles, Cherry was among those to received the freedom of the city of Leeds as part of the club's centenary celebrations.

Leeds paid tribute to Cherry, saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Trevor’s wife Sue, sons Darren and Ian, daughter Danielle and his five grandchildren at this difficult time."

Having finished his playing career at Bradford City, Cherry would go on to manage the Bantams for five years.

He was in charge when a fire at their Valley Parade ground killed 56 supporters on May 11 1985.

Bradford and his other former club Huddersfield Town also paid tribute in the wake of his passing.
