FAI pull out of Toulon Tournament due to budget restrictions

The Republic of Ireland under 21's will not be taking part in the Toulon Tournament in June due to financial restrictions.

The 12-team tournament played a key role in the development of Stephen Kenny's under 21 squad but the Irish Independent is reporting there will be no return to France this summer as financial realities in the FAI kick in.

Kenny's side reached the semi-finals thanks to the likes of Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah, who have both since gone on to make their Premier League debuts.

It also means Stephen Kenny's final game as Under-21 manager will be away to Luxembourg next month.

The former Dundalk boss has guided his side to the top of their qualifying group and within touching distance of reaching their first European Championships at Under-21 level.

Ireland will secure a first ever Playoff if they beat Iceland in Tallaght on March 26th and Luxembourg in Beggen five days later.

Kenny's successor will be in charge away to top seeds Italy in October in the final game of the group.

Kenny will replace Mick McCarthy as senior manager when Ireland's involvement with Euro 2020 ends.

The Boys in Green need to win two Playoff games to reach Euro 2020.
