Cork want to host Rangers at Turners Cross

The draw for the second qualifying round of the Europa League has thrown up the possibility of a clash between Cork City and Rangers.

Cork City are hopeful they will be able to host Rangers at Turner's Cross if both clubs advance to the second qualifying round of the Europa League.

The last time Rangers played a European tie against League of Ireland opposition was 1998 when they beat Shelbourne 7-3 on aggregate. Shels were forced to play their home leg at Tranmere's Prenton Park due to security concerns over it being staged at Tolka Park.

Rangers came to Ireland in 1984 to face Bohemians at Dalymount Park in the UEFA Cup. Bohs won the first leg 3-2 in an eventful night on and off the pitch but Rangers won the second leg 2-0 to advance 4-3 on aggregate.

For this game to happen, Cork will have to overcome Progres Niederkorn of Luxembourg or Cardiff Metropolitan University. Steven Gerrard’s side are awaiting the winners of Prishtina of Kosovo or St Joseph's from Gibraltar in the first round.

The second round games will be played on July 25 and August 1, with the winner of the tie involving Rangers at home first.

Cork City's operations manager Eanna Buckley told the Irish Times: "They usually raise any issues they have the day after the draw.

"We will speak to them, to the FAI and to Rangers but Turner's Cross is our home and unless somebody tells us otherwise we will work on the basis that the game is going ahead there."
