Chris Wilder set to leave Sheffield United

Sheffield United are on the lookout for a new manager with reports that Chris Wilder has been sacked.

The Blades cancelled their pre-match press conference on Friday morning ahead of Sunday's Premier League away to Leicester.

Wilder took charge of his hometown club in May 2016 and guided them from the bottom of League One to the Premier League promotion in three years.

The Blades were tipped to go down last season but were the surprise package, going on to finish ninth in the league with their best finish since 1975.

Their success was built on a solid back five - which included Irish internationals John Egan and Enda Stevens - and the form of goalkeeper Dean Henderson but the England international returned to Manchester United.

Wilder was without several of that preferred defensive unit for far too many games this season so the inability to keep goals out caught up with them.

They've only four wins from 28 games, which includes a shock 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

There have been major issues behind the scenes with Wilder and owner Prince Abdullah.

Wilder wanted to add to his squad but the owner felt he had provided significant funds for new players.

Sander Berge, Oli McBurnie and Rhian Brewster were all signed for significant fees but with limited success.

The Blades travel to Leicester on Sunday but the countdown is very much on to relegation back down to the Championship.
