Chelsea set to pip Liverpool to signing of Timo Werner

Timo Werner is poised to join Chelsea in a €60million euro deal.

It's believed Frank Lampard's side have activated the 24-year old's release clause at RB Leipzig, one which is due to expire on June 15.

Liverpool had been front-runners to sign the Germany international, with Jurgen Klopp holding multiple conversations with the forward.

Bild claim that Chelsea have agreed a deal which will see Werner sign a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge worth €10million a year.

Liverpool had reportedly asked for time from Leipzig regarding a move, with the Premier League champions-elect being his preferred destination.

A Chelsea move will serve as a hammer-blow to Liverpool's summer business aspirations.

It's believed Klopp sees Werner as the ideal addition to his squad.

Bild reporter Christian Falk told the Pod Save The Ball podcast that the Liverpool boss spoke with the striker over Easter.

"It’s not only about football, [Klopp] wants to see the player – normally in person, he prefers – and he doesn’t talk about football all the time, he talks about life", Falk said.

"He wants to know, ‘Is the player good in his head?

"‘Is he a player which fits his team spirit?’ and I think Werner is a player who fits to Klopp."

Despite Werner and Klopp playing footsy, Chelsea haven't been shy about casting admiring glances towards a player who's scored 25 times in 29 Bundesliga games for Leipzig this season.

He was reportedly a target for the Blues in the January transfer window when Lampard was left frustrated in his attempts to bolster his attacking options.

Confirmation of the signing will mean Chelsea have added both Werner and Hakim Ziyech to their attacking roster for next season.

Manchester United were also believed to be keen, but positive negotiations between Chelsea and Leipzig have taken place with just minor details needed to be ironed out.

Liverpool were reported to be holding out for another year to make a deal, when Werner's asking price is to drop.

However, their dithering has opened the door for Chelsea.
