How Ireland can qualify for Euro 2020

The Republic of Ireland remain unbeaten in Group D of the European Championship qualifiers following last night's 1-1 draw with Switzerland at the Aviva Stadium.

Mick McCarthy's side have three games left to secure a place at Euro 2020 but the remaining fixtures in the group will be anything but straight-forward.

The Boys in Green are back in action on Tuesday night when they face Bulgaria in a friendly in Dublin.

After that, attention turns to next month's away games against Georgia and Switzerland.

Ireland drew away to Georgia in the last campaign but anything other than a win in Tbilisi on October 12 would make things very difficult heading into the final two qualifiers.

It's also significant that Ireland's game against Georgia takes place a few hours before Denmark and Switzerland meet in Copenhagen.

A win for the Danes or the Swiss in that game would mean Ireland could claim a top-two finish in the group with a win against Georgia followed by draws with Switzerland and Denmark.

Even if Ireland fail to secure one of the qualifying spots in the group, they could still qualify via the Nations League despite relegation from the second tier last year.

Ireland's remaining fixtures in Group D:

Georgia v Ireland (October 12)

Switzerland v Ireland (October 15)

Ireland v Denmark (November 18)
