Burnley's winless league run ends as Wood splinters Palace

Burnley's winless Premier League run came to an end on Monday evening as Sean Dyche's side beat Crystal Palace at Turf Moor.

Chris Wood grabbed the game's only goal inside the eighth minute.

Palace's cause wasn't helped by the absence of Wilfried Zaha, with the club confirming prior to kick-off that their influential winger had contracted COVID-19.

Roy Hodgson's side fell behind early when Cheikhou Kouyaté failed to adequately deal with a hopeful Johann Gudmundsson ball.

Jay Rodriguez deftly laid the ball off for Wood to fire past Vicente Guaita.

Palace could have a fair argument for deserving parity by the break, with Nathaniel Clyne and Andros Townsend both drawing saves from Nick Pope.

Burnley should have been 2-0 up when Gudmundsson found himself one-on-one with Guaita, but the Icelandic international smacked the ball against the bar.

Pope then had to bail Dwight McNeil out of trouble, saving from Michy Batshuayi after a sloppy backpass put the Belgian through on goal.

The three points were made safe late on, when cat-like reflexes from Pope denied Christian Benteke from close range.

The win moves Burnley out of the bottom three, while Palace drop two places to 11th in the Premier League table.
