Bayern Munich beat Liverpool and Man Utd to Upamecano signing

Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Dayot Upamecano on a five-year deal.

The RB Leipzig centre-back will join the Bavarian giants in the summer, after the Champions League and Club World Cup-winners beat reported competition from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United.

The French international is an almost exclusive product of Red Bull. He began his career at Red Bull Salzburg's feeder club Liefering before moving to Salzburg in 2016.

He'd spend barely two years in Austria before joining Leipzig for a fee believed to be €10million.

Upamecano was a key part of the Leipzig side that qualified for the Champions League, and then went on to reach last season's semi-finals under Julian Nagelsmann.

The 22-year old is contracted to Leipzig until 2023, but speculation over a €42million release clause in the summer had brought some European heavyweights sniffing at the door of the Bundesliga club.

But it's Bayern who have pounced.

Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic told Bild, "I can confirm that [Upamecano's signing] and we’re very happy.

"We had very good, intensive and professional discussions with Dayot and his agent Volker Struth for several months.

"“We knew we had tough competition. We presented him with our vision of his career at Bayern.

“At the end of a long process, the player, his family and his management were convinced that FC Bayern was the right partner for them.

“Dayot will play for Bayern Munich for the next five seasons.”
