Aymeric Laporte could be poised for a place in Spain's squad this summer's European Championship.
Manchester City's French defender has never played senior international football for the country of his birth.
Having played in Spain for eight years prior to his City move, Laporte qualifies for La Roja through their residency rules.
The 26-year old captained France at U17, U18, U19 and U21 levels, but has never managed to make the breakthrough to the senior side.
In August 2019, Laporte was called into Didier Deschamps' squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers with Albania and Andorra. However, a knee injury that forced him to miss five months of the season also scuppered his international hopes with Les Bleus.
It now appears Laporte is ready to declare for Spain.
Luis Enrique has asked the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) directors to look into the possibility of calling up the former Athletic Bilbao man for Euro 2020 according to Marca.
The manager is on the hunt for a long-term successor to Barcelona's Gerard Pique.
The RFEF are still awaiting final confirmation from FIFA, but it's claimed that will be merely a formality.
Laporte's future is uncertain on both the club and country front.
Signed in 2018 for €65million, he's fallen down the defensive pecking order at the Etihad following the arrival of Ruben Dias. The Portuguese defender has formed a miserly partnership with John Stones, helping City to the brink of the Premier League title.
When asked about his standing in the side earlier this year, Laporte said, "At the moment I'm here. We'll see what happens. I always thought I'd spend many years here and I hope that will happen.
"I will see what happens between now and the end of the season, but for now I'm happy."
