Andy Carroll set for move back to Newcastle United

Newcastle United are set to roll back the years and bring back local boy Andy Carroll to the club after he was released by West Ham at the end of his contract.

The 30-year-old left St James' Park for €38 million (£35 million), going to Liverpool in a January 2011 transfer deadline day move. At the time, Carroll claimed he had been forced out of the club, with Newcastle United saying he handed in a transfer request once an initial bid from Liverpool was turned down.

It's being reported that he has already agreed to personal terms with Newcastle. He would become Steve Bruce's fifth signing of the season, following the captures of Joelinton, Jetro Willems, Allan Saint-Maximin and Swedish international Emil Krafth. It is yet another twist to an already explosive summer for the North-East club, following the departure of Rafa Benitez and the supposed attempted takeover by a Sheikh.

During his time with Liverpool, the nine-time England international made 44 league appearances for the Merseysiders, scoring six goals. While when in London with the Hammers, Carroll started over 140 times in all competitions, bagging himself over 30 goals.

It is believed the deal does not need to be completed today, due to Andy Carroll being a free agent.
