Alisson ruled out of Liverpool's Atletico return leg with muscle injury

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has been ruled out of their Champions League last-16 second leg with Atletico Madrid.

The Brazilian is suffering from a hip muscle injury which will also see him miss Saturday's Premier League visit of Bournemouth to Anfield.

The news comes as a significant blow to Jurgen Klopp, whose side have lost three of their last four games in all competitions.

It's hoped Alisson may return for the Merseyside derby with Everton on March 16 but that too appears unlikely.

Adrian deputised for Alisson in the midweek FA Cup defeat at Chelsea, and Klopp's revealed Alisson suffered the injury before that game at Stamford Bridge, "He had a little incident in training before the Chelsea game.

"We all thought it was nothing and it was clear he would not play anyway, the plan was he was on the bench.

"There, we thought, ‘Come on, we don’t have to take any risks’ so left him out of the squad. [There was a] scan the next day and they found something. So now he is out. We will see next week for sure and then we will see."

Klopp didn't want to commit Alisson to the St. Patrick's weekend game at Goodison, "I don’t want to say no [for the Merseyside derby] but I don’t know if he will be available. He is not available for the next week, not for tomorrow and not the next week.

"Then we have to judge the situation new. I would say after the international break he is back 100 per cent, whatever we can get before that we will see."

In better news for the Premier League champions-elect, Jordan Henderson could return for Wednesday's visit of Atletico.

The influential skipper has missed Liverpool's last three games with a hamstring injury and will also sit out the meeting with Bournemouth.

Naby Keita has returned to training, while Xherdan Shaqiri remains out.
