David de Gea an injury doubt for Manchester United against Liverpool

David de Gea has emerged as an injury doubt ahead of Manchester United's Premier League clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The Spanish stopper had made some impressive saves for Spain in the 1-1 draw with Sweden in the European Championship 2020 qualifiers at the Friends Arena - the draw securing Spain's passage to the finals.

Those saves were before he limped off on the hour mark after a relatively innocuous-looking incident.

De Gea cleared a straightforward backpass in the 59th minute and immediately appeared to have an issue. The 'keeper clutched his right leg with commentators suggesting he was suffering from a muscle injury.

The news will be unwelcome for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who already has a long injury list. There were up to eight players ruled out before the incident with the four-time Manchester United player of the year.

Injuries

As it stands, that treatment list includes David de Gea, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard, Diogo Dalot, Mason Greenwood, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Luke Shaw. Aaron Wan-Bissaka had suffered illness but is expected to return.

Pogba, Martial, Lingard, Lindelof, Jones, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka and Bailly all missed United’s last league game against Newcastle. While Dalot limped off and Greenwood withdrew from the England Under-21 squad through injury.

Lindelof started for Sweden in the game DeGea was withdrawn from, so may be in line for some action against Liverpool on Sunday.

Solskjaer is expected to give an update on the extent of the injury list in his press briefing on Friday.

Liverpool had more positive news on the health of their first choice 'keeper with Alisson expected to return. The Brazilian has been out since picking up a calf injury in the opening game of the season.

Liverpool's results have not shown any ill effects from Alisson's absence. The Merseysiders are a perfect eight from eight in the Premier League so far.
