'No plans' to strip Saint Petersburg of Champions League final | UEFA

UEFA is considering moving this season's Champions League final away from Saint Petersburg - but insists no decision has yet been made.

The Gazprom Arena, located in the Russian city, is scheduled to be the venue for the decider in late May.

However, amid heightened political tension between Russia and Ukraine, it's believed UEFA will move European football's showpiece to another location.

It comes after Russia's President, Vladamir Putin, announced a decision to send troops into certain regions in Ukraine.

While it's widely anticipated the final will be moved, UEFA has remained tight-lipped and refused to confirm any decision in a brief statement.

“Uefa is constantly and closely monitoring the situation,” the governing body said in a statement.

“At present, there are no plans to change the venue.”

Among the alternative venues being mooted if the game is moved is Wembley.

However, the scheduling of the match could present a problem for the London venue, if it were to be chosen.

The League Two and Championship play-off finals are currently due to take place on that weekend at the iconic venue.

Wembley played host to the Euro 2020 last summer, which courted significant controversy.

Scenes of violence erupted before, during and after England's loss to Italy.

The Football Association, in the aftermath, said there were “unprecedented” levels of public disorder on display.
