Dublin to maintain host status but UEFA unsure over Euros title

European football's governing body have flip-flopped over the title of the 16th European Championships.

Despite Euro 2020 being provisionally postponed until 2021, UEFA announced that it would still be called Euro 2020.

However, UEFA have since backtracked and it appears that Euro 2020 (to be held in 2021) might yet be called Euro 2021 after all. Or perhaps even some wacky new name yet to be revealed! Who knows? Certainly not UEFA.

They tweeted on Friday evening to say:

"With apologies for the earlier error, to be clear no decision has yet been made on the name of the rearranged EURO to be held in 2021. The earlier tweet was sent by mistake."

The decision to postpone the tournament for 12 months was taken earlier this week due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

UEFA did confirm that all venues, including Dublin, will remain in place in the pan European tournament.

We trust that all of our venues will remain the same," they announced in a statement. "Ensuring the tournament remains true to its original vision: staging a truly Europe-wide event that befits the EURO's 60th birthday. The tournament will still be known as UEFA EURO 2020."

UEFA added that it's still too early to know when club football across Europe will be able to return to normal. The Premier League remains suspended until the end of April while LaLiga hope to resume games in the middle of May.

"It is too early to say when football will be played again. As we have done since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, UEFA will continue to liaise with the World Health Organization (WHO) and national authorities to guide European football's response to a constantly changing crisis.

While Tuesday's decisions show that we are ready to make difficult choices, they will always be based on expert advice and put the health of all those involved first."
