Sheffield United tie "outstanding" Enda Stevens down to long-term deal

Enda Stevens has signed a new long-term contract with Sheffield United.

The Republic of Ireland wing-back will remain with the Bramall Lane club until at least the summer of 2023.

Stevens joined United from Portsmouth in the summer of 2017. He helped the Blades win promotion to the Premier League in his first season and has been one of the first names on Chris Wilder's team-sheet since.

During that time, he's become the first-choice left-back for the Republic of Ireland.

Wilder beamed about Stevens' extension, telling the club's website, "Enda has become one of the top players in the division, in his position, in our opinion, and he deserves rewarding with a new contract, that's what we're trying to do at the moment.

"His performances have been outstanding for both club and country and he is an important and integral part of our team in and out of possession."

Stevens' thunderbolt of a goal at home to Brighton last month was his second of the campaign in which Sheffield United are pushing for European football.

However, he managed an hour of his comeback from a calf injury sustained in that Brighton game and has been ruled out for "a couple of weeks" with a further injury according to Wilder.

It means - should the game go ahead - that Stevens will miss the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2020 playoff with Slovakia in Bratislava.

The 29-year old says he's delighted to have finally put pen-to-paper on a new deal, adding, "As a group we've built on the success of last season, but we don't want to stand still. We want to continue to do well and finish as high in the table as possible.

"The manager is building something special here. He's keeping the core group together and now adding to it to make us even stronger and everyone is happy to be involved in the journey."
