New Linfield away jersey shares UVF flag colour scheme

Linfield's choice of new away kit may come under some scrutiny, and not for the usual reasons of taste.

The Belfast club's 2020/21 change kit shares a colour scheme with the flag of the loyalist paramilitary group, the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF).

The kit was unveiled today on Linfield's website, showing a purple jersey adorned with an orange sash.

The Danske Bank Premiership champions say the kit was "excellently designed by our long term kit suppliers Umbro".

Club captain Jamie Mulgrew and Northern Ireland women's international Kelsie Burrows modelled the kit in a series of socially distanced photos.

The purple and orange flag of the UVF was first displayed - according to React - "on the U.V.F. review parade held at Balmoral, Belfast in 1912".

The UVF officially ended its campaign of violence in 2007, but during the Troubles they were responsible for more than 500 deaths.

Linfield say they are "totally opposed to sectarianism and all forms of discriminatory behaviour and abuse."

The club say they "look forward to the day when this attractive new kit... can be proudly worn in action by all our teams."

Should you wish to purchase the new away kit, the jersey will cost you £50 (€56) and the shorts £20 (€22) via Linfield's online 'Superstore'. Happy shopping.
