Nadal beats Schwartzman to edge closer to 13th French Open title

Rafa Nadal is through to a thirteenth French Open men's singles final.

The three-time defending champion beat Diego Schwartzman in their semi-final 6-3, 6-3, 7-6.

Nadal has never lost a final at Roland-Garros.

He'll play either Novak Djokovic or Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday.

It was swift revenge for Nadal who lost to Schwartzman in the quarter-finals of Rome's ATP Masters just prior to their arrival in Paris.

Schwartzman was looking to become just the second ever player to register two wins on clay over Nadal.

The Spaniard hit 38-winners and won six break points in dispatching the Argentine.

"It was very difficult,” said on court afterwards, "I’d like to thank the crowd for their support. It’s incredible to be in another Roland Garros final. It’s always a special moment. I made a couple of mistakes in the third set, when I missed a couple of volleys.

"I know when I play Diego it’s difficult to the very end. A few weeks ago, I lost to him in Rome and I’m happy to be improving each day.

"I didn’t play my best in Rome, but he always plays his best and he had a fantastic win against Dominic [Thiem] a few days ago."

Victory on Sunday will move Nadal level on 20 Grand Slam titles alongside Roger Federer.
