Munster are currently too "one-dimensional" to succeed in Europe

Munster's Champions Cup exit was confirmed last week with a semi-final defeat to Saracens in Dublin.

The reigning European champions were comfortable 26-10 winners. CJ Stander scored a consolation try for Munster in the final moments of the game to add some shine to the scoreboard.

Afterwards, Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus told Newstalk that the scoreline did not flatter the London side.

"I think the scoring margin is a true reflection of the game and I think it's just something we have to accept. In nine months we've only come so far," he said.

Despite the loss, Munster have performed beyond expectations this season and could still win the PRO12. The nature of the defeat in Dublin has left questions to be asked with the direction the team is going.

Speaking on Friday morning, former Munster player and Newstalk Breakfast presenter Alan Quinlan said the team are currently too "one-dimensional" to succeed in Europe.

"They need to expand their game a bit. Rassie Erasmus said that after the game last week. They need to get more strings to their bow, more attacking threat and a bit of width to their game.

"It's very difficult to win a Champions Cup, or to win any trophy, by being direct and kicking a lot. They probably over-kicked a little bit last week. I think they are a little bit one-dimensional."

Quinlan added that the players know there is room for improvement in the team, following the nature of the defeat to Saracens.

"You need a couple of game-plans to win trophies, and you need to change it up during games. They need to improve on that front."

Munster return to PRO12 action this weekend, knowing a win away to Treviso could guarantee a home PRO12 semi-final.
