"I was really happy for one hour" | Mourinho gets Spurs winning on the road

José Mourinho channelled his inner positive one after his first victory as Tottenham Hotspur manager.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea manager was the last person off the pitch at the London Stadium, applauding the Spurs fans and congratulating his players after a 3-2 win over West Ham.

Son Heung Min, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane got the away side's goals all within fifty minutes before West Ham fought back with two of their own in the second half through Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbonna.

It was just Spurs' second away league win since January and Mourinho put the two late goals down to a natural and understandable fatigue.

"For the last twenty minutes of course there was fatigue. Players were coming from their national teams, all the emotions of losing their manager, another one comes, they start working with me, I'm trying to control their emotions and their intensity during training.

"I think they went beyond their limits for people who were coming back from the national team.

"I was really happy for one hour. I was very, very happy we were playing well."

The Portuguese manager explained that he drew on his experience in the Premier League to guide his players through after half-time.

"I think we are lucky that I have so many years of Premier League [experience]. I told the players at half time that even if we have a three-goal lead at minute 85 the game will be open, and I think they understood that."

Mourinho added that it was important for the players to enjoy the game after a difficult start to the season under previous manager Mauircio Pochettino.

"I was not just happy with our work rate but also our enjoyment.

"I think the most important thing today was not just to win 3-0 or play wonderful – also it didn't matter how they got the three points – but breaking that mental barrier of so many months without an away win, so it was very important.

"I wanted them to be back to happiness and there is nothing better than to win a football match to be happy."
