'I don't like it and I hope it doesn't happen' | James Milner shuts down ESL

Liverpool vice-captain James Milner is not happy with his club's decision to join the proposed European Super League.

Liverpool are one of the dozen proposing a breakaway league, separate from the UEFA Champions League. The plans have been met with derision from fans of the clubs involved, and now the players are joining in.

After Jürgen Klopp's side's 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Monday, Milner spoke to Sky Sport, voicing his displeasure with the club's plans for joining the Super League.

"I think for everyone there is a lot of questions," Milner said. "In my personal opinion, I don't like it, and hopefully it doesn't happen.

"For the same reasons as everybody else that have been talking about over the last day. It has been difficult for us with our game, trying to prepare for it.

"I can only imagine what else has been said about it and I would probably agree with most of it."

Milner suggested that it was difficult to concentrate on their encounter with Leeds following the news just 24 hours prior to it.

"For us, we just tried to concentrate on the game, there was obviously a lot going on," Milner said. "For us, we just have to try and be professional; that is the only thing we can control.

"[We became aware of it] the same time as everyone else, yesterday. That was the first we heard of it."

While he understood and emphasised with the fans' frustrations, Milner added that he felt their 'welcome' to Elland Road on Monday night was 'unjust'.

"The players obviously have no say, so the welcome we got to the ground tonight felt a bit unjust," Milner said.

"We are here to play football; we have no control over it. We just need to get on the field and try and finish the season strong."
