Micheál Naughton elected as new LGFA President

Former Ulster President Micheál Naughton has been elected as President-elect of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association.

The Sligo native, who now resides in Donegal, held off the challenge of his fellow county man, former Connacht LGFA President Liam McDonagh and Dublin native Dominic Leech, who is the current President of the Leinster LGFA, to win the right to succeed Marie Hickey.

Naughton will take up the position once Hickey completes the final year of her three-year term this time next year. He will be the Association's 13th different President.

Naughton is a former manager of the Donegal Senior women's side, guiding them to the 2010 All-Ireland Intermediate title.  He has also served as the Donegal county board chairperson.

Originally from the Castleconnor club in west Sligo, the President-elect has been Donegal-based for over 20 years and is currently a Fianna Fáil member of Donegal County Council.

Voting for the position took place at the annual congress in Loughrea, County Galway on Saturday afternoon.

Congress also considered a number of motions throughout the course of the two days.

One of the most significant changes to the playing rules will be the introduction of a rule whereby two points are awarded when a player kicks a 45 over the bar.

The rule change, brought forward by Kilkenny, will see a successfully converted 45-metre kick, awarded after the opposition puts the ball over their own endline earn a team two points.

The new rule is set to come into play from May 1st of this year.

Elsewhere, it was also decided at the Galway venue that next year's congress would take place in Antrim.
