Michael Dempsey leaves Kilkenny hurling management team after 15 seasons

Kilkenny boss Brian Cody has confirmed that Michael Dempsey has stepped away from his management team after 15 years.

Laois man Dempsey joined the Cats' set-up as physical trainer ahead of the 2005 season and was involved in eight All-Ireland victories.

Cody says Dempsey brought a 'huge knowledge' and he 'couldn't speak highly enough' of him.

“Michael’s been with us for so long now, before that with the U21’s, but I mean he’s been working with us in the whole area of strength and conditioning, fitness and in all various aspects from a hurling point of view as well, its well documented what he brought to it," the Kilkenny manager told KCLR.

“I couldn’t speak highly enough of Michael and what he’s done, and again in a very understated way and a very humble way he worked, he had a huge knowledge of everything that’s involved with it, constantly upskilling himself and keeping ahead of the posse and that”.

Legendary former forward DJ Carey is expected to now join Kilkenny's backroom team as a selector.

The five-time All-Ireland winner would come in to replace the departing Derek Lyng, who served as a selector since 2014.

Carey steered Kilkenny to Leinster under-20 success this summer and has also managed IT Carlow's Fitzgibbon Cup team.
