McIlroy and Lowry still in the race for medals at the Olympics

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry remain in medal contention after three rounds of the men's golf competition at the Olympics.

Four-time major winner McIlroy carded a four-under-par round of 67 this morning to move to fifth-place at 11-under. While his playing partner Lowry is 10-under-par into tomorrow's final round.

Xander Schauffele holds a one-shot lead in the gold medal position at 14-under. The American didn't manage to hit any of the first eight fairways but his impressive play around the greens helped him stay narrowly ahead of the chasing pack.

“Yeah, your putter doesn't know how bad you're swinging it, it's a completely different part of the game,” Schauffele said.

“So I made that joke to my caddie on 9 saying, if I can roll this in, it's ugly, but we're getting it done right now. So I would like tomorrow to be a little bit more fun all around.”

Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama heads up the chase at 13-under with Mexico's Carlos Ortiz and Paul Casey of Great Britain two shots back in a tie for third.
