Martin Braithwaite joins Barcelona, buy out clause set at €300 million

Danish international striker Martin Braithwaite has completed his surprise move to Barcelona from Leganes for €18 million.

The former Middlesbrough player, who is 28, has been given permission to join by La Liga.

Barca have been looking for a replacement for Ousmane Dembele, who is injured for the next six months.

His contract will run until the end of June 2024, with a buy out clause of €300 million.

Republic of Ireland fans will know Braithwaite, who scored at the Aviva Stadium back in November, in the 1-1 draw that consigned the Boys in Green to next month's play off with Slovakia.

His goal helped qualify Denmark automatically for Euro 2020, but he won't be able to play for Barcelona in this season's Champions League as the registration deadline has passed.

Barcelona announced the signing on their official website today by stating:

"Martin Braithwaite does a lot more than put balls in nets. An extremely hard-working, dedicated player, he can play anywhere in the attack. At Leganés, he was also the first line of defence, using his speed to drop back, as well as to produce amazing solo runs as if the ball was stuck to his feet. He’s also a wonderful combination player – in short, he is a headache for any defence to have to deal with."
