Mark Lawrenson identifies a missing jigsaw piece for Liverpool

Mark Lawrenson believes signing a No 10 to the mix is one of the very few additions Liverpool could benefit from.

The former Liverpool and Ireland defender joined us on the Football Show to share his thoughts on the club's Champions League comeback against Barcelona.

"The only thing I would say looking at them, I think you might need a No 10," he said.

"Somebody a little bit cleverer that can play, whether you want to play 4-2-1-3 or whatever, given the front three and how Firmino works with the two other boys.

"Just to give yourself something a little bit different. Because for the majority of the season, goals from midfield were scarce.

"And if you look at them, you might argue that might be the only area where they really seem to need to improve. I think [Klopp's] said that he's not desperate for any players. But as you know in this game, you can't stand still.

"If he can get some type of No 10 for want of a better description, I think that would only make them stronger."

Anfield Effect

He also discussed the Anfield effect and how that has contrasting effects on Liverpool and the opposition.

"There is absolutely something special about it," he said.

"It's like lighting the fire underneath you. It can be a tackle, it can be somebody closing down. And you just kind of ignite this thing and they just go mad.

"It's never in the day, it's always at night and it's nearly always in Europe. And I really do feel if you're a member of the opposition, you're thinking: 'What the hell is this?'

"Last night when you looked at Barcelona, probably when the third goal went in, there were shots of Suarez and stuff and they looked completely bamboozled.

"They hadn't a clue what was happening. We've seen it loads of time before."
