Mario Mandzukic transfer to Manchester United deal falls apart

Manchester United have ended their interest in Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic.

It is believed the Old Trafford club pulled out of the potential deal due to the Serie A champions setting a price tag of over €15 million (£14 million), while the player is understood to have asked to be paid €150,000 a week.

The Croatian international signed for The Old Lady in 2015 from Spanish side Atletico Madrid on a four-year contract worth around €21 million. During his time in Turin, the 33-year-old won four Serie A titles, as well as three Coppa Italia. In the four seasons he has spent with Maurizio Sarri's side he has made 162 appearances in all competitions, scoring 44 goals.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on the hunt for a replacement striker after Romelu Lukaku's switch to Inter Milan looks to be a done deal, with the Belgian international in Italy completing a medical. Manchester United are expected to get close to the fee they paid to Everton two years ago for the 26-year-old, with the fee believed to be around €80 million.

Manchester United had also been linked with a move for Paulo Dybala. However, that deal died last week due to the Argentinian's wage demands.

The Old Trafford club have made three signings this summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side got right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for €53m and winger Daniel James from Swansea for €16m early in the window. While last weekend, they completed the deal of Harry Maguire from Leicester City for a world-record fee for a defender. The deal of €93 million (£85 million) surpassed the fee paid by Liverpool for Virgil Van Dyke.
