Madison Square Garden debut a "dream" for Joe Ward

Joe Ward says it's a "dream" to make his professional debut at Madison Square Garden.

The former world light-heavyweight silver medalist has confirmed that he'll be fighting on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin's middleweight world title bout at the iconic New York venue on October 5th.

An opponent has yet to be confirmed for the Westmeath southpaw while GGG will face Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the IBF middleweight strap which was recently stripped from Saul Canelo.

25-year-old Ward is in training with Buddy McGirt and says he's hoping to be a world champion within three years.

Ward and promoter Lou DiBella joined Ronan Mullen and Andy Lee on Off The Brawl earlier this month after he signed his professional contract.

"I believe that Joe’s got the best team possible and I’m looking forward to his pro debut," said the New York-based promoter of the move.

“Not only does he have the ability to be a champion, I think he has the ability to be the face of boxing . . . to be something like Katie Taylor is in the women’s game, in the men’s game.

“Within two years I expect him to be a world-ranked contender and I think that he has the ability, everything it takes, to be a world champion within three years.”
