Lowry's win "resonates around the world"-Andrew Cotter

Shane Lowry's British Open win has resonated around the world and not just in Ireland, according to the BBC's Andrew Cotter.

While Lowry fever has truly taken over the island of Ireland it seems that elsewhere the story of the Offaly man's win has really struck a chord. Cotter said he is the talk of the golfing world at the moment.

"I don't think it's an insular thing I think it is resonating around the world.

"I've been listening to golf podcasts around the world and watched a lot of golf coverage from as well and it does resonate, this isn't just someone over there who's won the Open Championship.

"It really has made people sit up and take notice as quite an important victory."

Cotter said that what got him through the final day of the Open was his natural talent for the game.

"He's got a fantastic feel, Shane Lowry, and that's why I am a big fan of him as well because he's not the identikit golfer that we see he's not doing it by numbers and by method.

"He's got one of the best short games in the world but he can do it in different conditions."

With the success of Portrush as a venue for the British Open, there have been calls for it to be used for the tournament in the future. Cotter thinks that as a course it more than passed the test this week.

"With the numbers that came into Portrush and how they were allowed to move around freely, those are the things that really matter.

"Then the course itself, I would say, is probably the best course on the rota - so it ticks all the boxes. It probably will be back in five years."

The Open will take place at the Royal St. George's Golf Club in Kent in 2020 but it may not be too long until there is another championship on this island again.
