Liverpool's Carabao Cup clash with Aston Villa to go ahead on planned date

Liverpool's Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Aston Villa has been confirmed for Tuesday 17 December (7.45pm kick-off) as originally scheduled.

The EFL confirmed this on Tuesday afternoon after discussions with Liverpool over the possibility of needing to find a suitable date for the Club to meet its commitments to the Carabao Cup, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup.

Liverpool  will be in action in the Club World Cup in Qatar on Wednesday 18 December, which is one of nine fixtures Jurgen Klopp will have to prepare for this December.

The club has released an official statement reacting to the announcement saying that as a result of the decision, they will be "utilising two playing squads simultaneously, with one squad participating in the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar and another in the Carabao Cup."

The statement went on to say that this is "not an ideal scenario" and the outcome was arrived at "with the best interests of the competition, our fellow clubs and ourselves as the sole motivating factor."

They've thanked the EFL for their efforts and confirmed alternative dates were discussed, but ultimately none were considered suitable without compromising the scheduling of the competition itself or placing an undue strain on our playing staff.

The Liverpool manager had recently threatened to pull out of the Carabao Cup unless a scheduling compromise was made.
