Liam Griffin: Davy Fitzgerald and Wexford a match made in heaven

Former Wexford hurling manager Liam Griffin feels Davy Fitzgerald and Wexford are a match made in heaven.

The county's senior hurlers defeated Kilkenny in the Allianz League quarter finals after winning five from five in Division 1B.

They now face a tough semi final against All Ireland champions Tipperary at Nowlan Park on April 16th.

"First of all, Liam Dunne built a very good squad, it has to be said," he told Off The Ball.

"Then Davy and Wexford is a match made in heaven in many respects because Davy must have learned every inch of the road he's been on and he's got a lot of experience.

"I think that [Wexford] team has matured very nicely and I think they were ready for someone like Davy and Davy was ready for someone like that and they're both gelling well together by the looks of it as far as I can see and I think everyone's a winner on this."

He also feels that Fitzgerald taking charge of Wexford has come at the right time for the team and manager.

"The timing of Davy coming in with a very high profile - a man with two All Ireland medals himself and managed Clare to win a National League title last year and an All Ireland final in 2013 - his pedigree is actually extremely good," said Griffin.

"Davy's a clever guy and he's learned every step of the road and I think Wexford are the beneficiaries. Wexford are better getting Davy now than getting him three years ago and that's good for Davy because you've got young guys who are going to eat out of the palm of his hand at the moment and that is absolutely fantastic."

He also praised the Wexford game plan against Kilkenny as they claimed a landmark win over a Leinster powerhouse.
