Brendan Rodgers relishes opportunity for Leicester to go second in Premier League

Leicester City can go up to second in the Premier League table tonight with a win over Southampton at St. Mary's.

New manager Brendan Rodgers, who arrived at the King Power in February, has taken the Foxes on an impressive run, with some arguing they look in more impressive form than their league winning side of 2015-16 under Claudio Ranieri.

Rodgers' side has five wins from nine games so far this campaign with two draws and two losses.

17 points is one more than they had at the same stage in that magical season.

Five of their opening nine games have been against sides from last season’s top seven.

Three points tonight and they'll leapfrog champions Manchester City, at least until they play Aston Villa in tomorrow's lunchtime game.

The manager, who has previously had spells at Celtic and Swansea, and famously brought Liverpool as close as they've ever been to league glory since the 80s in 2014, has been keen to praise his side ahead of their trip to the south coast tonight.

"The players have been absolutely brilliant.

"They've shown so many qualities in the opening games and for me the nice thing in it all is we can be better and improve.

"We play a tough team that will be hard to play against but we're looking forward to this game and to hopefully collect another three points.

“We can’t forget what our objective was at the start of the season, that’s why we don’t get carried away with it."

Southampton meanwhile, who are only hovering above the relegation zone on goal difference, will be without two key players for the clash.

Ralph Hasenthuttl has said that winger Moussa Djenepo and right-back Cédric Soares will not be back to full fitness in time.

Kick-off between Southampton and Leicester City at St. Mary's is at 8pm Friday 25 October.
