Atletico keep Leicester at bay to reach Champions League semis

Leicester City's adventure in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League has come to an end after a 2-1 aggregate defeat to last season's runners up Atletico Madrid.

Reigning Premier League champions Leicester trailed 1-0 after the first leg of their quarter final and in their first season at this level, the last eight is as good as it gets in a memorable European campaign for the Foxes.

But Atletico took control of the tie after 26 minutes of action at the King Power Stadium as  midfielder Saul Niguez headed in to leave the Spanish side 2-0 up on aggregate and Craig Shakespeare's side needing three goals to progress.

And it took an hour for Leicester to get one of those as Jamie Vardy scored from close range.

But despite putting Diego Simeone's side under pressure in the final half hour, Leicester were unable to find the two goals they needed against one of the most resilient sides on the continent.

Atletico now advance to the semi finals where they will hope to advance to their third Champions League final in four seasons - and if they are to progress to a decider, will be aiming to go fourth time lucky in a European Cup/Champions League final.
